Week 9 reading review – Practical Considerations for Multimedia Courseware Development: An EFL IVD Experience
Teachers always use Interactive CDs or Electronic-books (E-book) by publishers when they are teaching in primary levels. We all know that English is a foreign or second language of Hong Kong students. They feel difficult in learning it as we speak Cantonese in the real world. So, the book or CDs can attract students' attention. They would feel more easy or interesting when they are learning. They would not feel frightened at least. Primary students love all the animations in it. My students love reading stories with E-book because they can watch those animations and listen different characters' voices through the book. Besides, they love playing games through it. They enjoy it very much. I think if teachers can use the multimedia approiately, students will get a lot.

Hi Amy,
Thanks for the reflection. What do you mean when you say that 'we speak Cantonese in the real world'? Which 'real world'?
How should teachers use multimedia appropriately? Who should be in control, in your opinion?
I would love to hear your opinions about the issues raised in this discussion so please consider leaving a comment there too.
'We speak Cantonese in the real world' means Cantonese is the first language that Hong Kong students speak every day. They seldom speak English outside classroom. 'real world' means 'the society'. When teachers want to draw students attention in class, they would use multimedia. It is work! If those students can pay attention in class and answer questions by teachers correctly, then, it shows the right use of multimedia. I think teachers should make reflections always after using multimedia and other materials.
Hi Amy,
It would be interesting to explore why Hong Kong students seldom speak English outside the classroom. Is it because of a lack of resources? The media is full of reports about how Hong Kong needs better speakers of English and Putonghua.
Regarding teachers' use of multimedia, are you saying that multimedia is a way of making your presentation of content more stimulating for students? What kind of interactions and tasks do you have in mind when using multimedia with your students?
Christoph
